Doulas: who are they and what do they do?

So, just what is a doula?

The term ‘doula’ (pronounced do-la) comes from the Greek and in ancient times described the woman who helped the lady of the house throughout her childbearing years. Now, it refers to a woman who is trained  to support pregnant women and new mothers and their families during pregnancy, labour and the first few days or weeks with the new baby. Doulas offer an invaluable combination of practical, emotional and educational support – support that, sadly, midwives and other medical staff rarely have the time to provide.

My aim, as a doula, is to help you with the pregnancy, birth and the early days with the baby.  To make them satisfying and empowering times for you and your family.

I am specifically trained as a massage doula. This means that I am qualified to offer massage pre-natally, during labour and post-natally. Massage is effective and safe in easing the pain that may accompany pregnancy and is also very helpful during labour.

I am fully insured for my work with Embody, this can be verified on their website.

For further details about the type of support I provide, see Services.
